The past few winters were a bit harsh on all of us, our homes especially. We spent a good part of these winters clearing off ice dams for people in the Fairfield, Bergen, & Westchester counties. Just so all of you an prepare for the next coming winter, here are a few tips on to help alleviate some of those pesky ice dams. First, make sure your attic is properly ventilated. The most optimum attic will hold the same temperature as the outside. To assure this make sure, your attic is getting more intake thru the soffit vent then there is exhaust thru the ridge vent. Also another popular trend is install a heating coil on your roof and in your gutters. This keeps the edge of the roof warmer and allows for more constant run off to occur versus a thaw run off and freeze. Although there is on way to 100% guarantee ice dams wont occur, these methods sure do alleviate a majority of what you will experience.
